The annual trip to NYC over spring break is designed as an intensive, one week experience of the NY art world. We will experience artists that are typically covered in art history courses (Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Dali) as well as artists who are living and working today. Although there is scheduled free time, the trip’s focus is on experiencing a lot of art in a short amount of time.
Average cost for the trip is $1,500. This cost includes all museums, meals, metro card, flight and apartment.
We will use NYC’s subway system and the occasional Uber to get around. The videos and links below should help answer some questions but if you have more please don’t hesitate to ask.

Navigating NYC
We will purchase a 7 day Unlimited Metro card. If you lose it you have to buy another one so treat it like cash. If you get lost your cell phone will probably not work if you are underground. Don’t panic. Walk out of the subway and send me a text or call. If I don’t respond I maybe also be in a subway. Wait there until you hear back from me.
What to research, download, read about before we go
- Read up on art history. Watch some of the Case For videos on YouTube to better help you understand some of the more unusual art we may encounter.
- Look at what’s on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. These museums are massive so its good to have a plan before you go.
- Download the Google Arts and Culture App, Artsy, ArtForum ArtGuide, See Saw, MoMA or Met apps for info about museums and exhibitions. Google maps is great for using the subway but you might also want a standalone subway app like NYC Subway.
Health and Safety
NYC is relatively safe but there are some things to be prepared for.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Don’t take all of your money with you each day. On the shared calendar I will have how much money we will need each day. Take that with you and a little spending money and leave the rest at home.
- Keep your phone charged
- We will average 8-10 miles of walking a day. Bring your most comfortable shoes and lace them tight. Prepare for longer walks now.
- There are very few public restrooms In the city. When we have the opportunity to go….go.
- Wash your hands a lot or use hand sanitizer.
